A Avanade Case Study
Magna, a global automotive supplier with more than 150,000 employees and 312 production facilities, needed to separate the IT estate of its spun-off interior division across 34 locations in North America, Europe and Asia. The project had to transfer PCs, servers and data from Magna’s systems to the buyer’s while preserving airtight data security and keeping live operations running amid a highly heterogeneous IT landscape that prevented a one-size-fits-all approach.
Avanade was selected to consult and implement a migration strategy that balanced security, stability and cost. Teams used a temporary Active Directory “airlock” to isolate and migrate AD structures, then severed links to Magna and moved systems to the new owner. The cutover of more than 10,000 workstations and servers was completed on schedule and within budget—performed mainly at nights and weekends without operational interruptions—and has led to a follow-up consolidation project.
