Home improvement retailer launches touch screen technology to streamline service and foster customer loyalty

Rautakesko is a Finnish home‑improvement retailer with 420 stores across eight countries. Facing high costs for physical locations and inventory—and losing sales as customers checked competitors’ sites or waited in long queues for staff help—the company needed a digital way to streamline in‑store service, improve the shopping experience and strengthen customer loyalty.

Avanade built a Windows 8 Digital Store Guide—32‑inch touch‑screen kiosks integrated with Rautakesko’s SharePoint‑based website and eCommerce—to display product info, pricing, availability and store maps while capturing usage data tied to sales. The solution reduced routine inquiries, freed staff for deeper consultation, delivered actionable customer insights (about 300 unique users and 2,000 actions per week per device), launched in two stores in five weeks and is planned for rollout to 140 stores in Finland.
