BG Group, a publicly listed global energy company operating in 20 countries, faced rising IT management costs and a fragmented legacy infrastructure inherited from its British Gas roots. With 240 servers supporting 1,900 users and numerous standalone departmental systems, the company needed a scalable, cost‑effective global platform that would cut costs, improve efficiency and support future applications.

Working with Accenture and Avanade, BG used Avanade’s Server Consolidation Assessment to implement Active Directory, Windows 2000 clustering, a SAN, ISA Server–based security and standardized provisioning, reducing servers from 240 to 150 and NT domains from 14 to 2. The result is a centrally supported, repeatable “design once, deploy everywhere” infrastructure that lowered support costs, improved application performance, freed IT capacity for proactive work, and is estimated to save £5m in operating costs over three years.
