Unified Office, a Nashua, NH–based provider of business-class communications (VoIP and IoT) for small and mid-sized businesses, grew rapidly after launching in 2011 and by 2016 was serving large national accounts. That growth brought complex telecommunications tax challenges—overlapping taxes and fees, constantly changing rates and rules, and high compliance risk that could create large liabilities if not managed proactively.

Avalara delivered a “soup to nuts” communications tax solution (AvaTax for Communications and Returns for Communications), taking over monitoring, calculations, filings, and remittance so Unified Office could offload tedious compliance work. Avalara handled initial filings and ongoing management, enabling continued growth to 1,300 customers across 37 states while increasing compliance, reducing tax risk, and giving the CFO and board greater confidence in the company’s financial governance.
