Giesswein, a long-standing Austrian retailer of woolen footwear and apparel, experienced a massive and unexpected surge in e-commerce orders at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Faced with the challenge of scaling up its warehouse operations quickly to handle this quadrupling of online sales, the company turned to the vendor AutoStore for an automated storage and retrieval solution to modernize its fulfillment processes.

AutoStore implemented a system consisting of 31 autonomous robots that move across a grid to retrieve bins from a high-density storage structure. This solution, installed by partner HÖRMANN Intralogistics, processes 900 picks per hour from 17,500 bins across five workstations. For Giesswein, the AutoStore system dramatically increased efficiency, made the work less labor-intensive for employees, and crucially enabled the company to handle the pandemic sales boom, which significantly increased sales and built greater trust in the brand.
