AutoStore Prepares Online Cosmetics Retailer for Growth

The customer, Arvato Supply Chain Solutions, a 3PL provider, faced the challenge of managing unprecedented e-commerce growth for their client Rituals Cosmetics. With order volumes skyrocketing, including peaks of over 25,000 orders per day, they needed a scalable and efficient logistics strategy to handle demand, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Arvato chose to implement the AutoStore system, an automated storage and retrieval solution, in partnership with Swisslog.

The AutoStore system implemented by the vendor included a grid of 36,000 bins serviced by 101 robots and 12 picking ports. This solution allowed Arvato to automatically handle 80% of orders, substantially reducing errors and processing times. The system's scalability was proven when it was rapidly expanded to enable 24/7 operations. Key results included the ability to process 120 picks per station and a doubling of orders per pallet, which significantly reduced the operation's CO2 footprint.
