A Autodesk Case Study
The Volterra-Detroit Foundation needed to digitally preserve Volterra’s nearly 3,000-year history—capturing archaeological sites, historic buildings and artworks to support conservation, maintenance, restoration and a potential UNESCO World Heritage nomination. Autodesk partnered on the effort, bringing reality-capture and BIM workflows (including Autodesk ReCap and ReMake) to document the walled city and its monuments.
Autodesk led an international two-week project using Faro laser scanners and 3DR drones to generate accurate point clouds, which were combined with GIS data and converted into detailed BIM 3D models; ReCap and ReMake processed high‑resolution imagery for virtual exhibits and 3D-printable replicas. The resulting models give the Volterra-Detroit Foundation and the City of Volterra actionable data for maintenance and restoration, virtual exhibits to broaden access, and material support for the UNESCO application.
