A Autodesk Case Study
VolkerWessels, working in alliance with ProRail, led the €170 million Zwolle–Herfte rail expansion to relieve a major capacity bottleneck at Zwolle station. The project faced complex constraints — dense underground utilities, existing structures, short 72‑hour work windows and large, frequently updated datasets — so VolkerWessels turned to Autodesk tools (including the ArcGIS Connector for Civil 3D, Civil 3D, Revit and ReCap Pro) to support integrated BIM and GIS workflows.
Autodesk’s solutions enabled dynamic exchange between design models and geospatial data (via ArcGIS Connector and ArcGIS Enterprise), letting teams visualize plans, link schedules, and resolve utility conflicts without repeated site visits. The integrated approach supported the project outcome of doubling track capacity between Zwolle and Herfte, delivery of 26 km of track with 50% reuse of track components and 19% reuse of 37,000 tonnes of ballast, and measurable improvements in data maintenance, collaboration and decision speed attributed to Autodesk’s toolset.
