The Charles H. Wright Museum’s digital transformation to becoming a ‘Smart Museum’

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History faced a significant challenge in its goal to become a "smart museum" due to a lack of reliable building documentation, including the loss of original blueprints in a fire. This gap hindered efficient facility maintenance, capital planning, and their broader sustainability initiatives, making it difficult to manage the complex 125,000-square-foot building effectively. To overcome this, they partnered with Autodesk to implement a digital transformation, utilizing the Autodesk Tandem platform.

Autodesk's solution involved a Scan-to-BIM-to-twin process, using laser scanning and Autodesk Revit to create a detailed digital twin of the museum in Autodesk Tandem. This provided a central repository for all facility data and integrated IoT sensors to monitor environmental conditions. The results empowered the museum with proactive facility maintenance, improved artifact preservation through climate monitoring, and data-driven insights for sustainability and exhibit design. The Autodesk Tandem platform helped break down departmental silos, saved staff time, and positioned the museum as a leader in using technology to achieve its mission and environmental goals.
