A Autodesk Case Study
Strathcona County, a specialized municipality on the outskirts of Edmonton, needed accurate, safe, and fast existing‑conditions data as its Wye Road corridor rapidly urbanized. To move from analog surveying to BIM-ready reality capture, the County adopted laser scanning and Autodesk’s Reality Capture solutions—using ReCap together with InfraWorks and Civil 3D—to replace time‑consuming, traffic‑exposed conventional surveys and improve stakeholder communication.
Using a Leica C10 scanner and Autodesk ReCap to process 128 scans across about 32 hectares (64 GB raw → 20 GB final), the County integrated point clouds into InfraWorks and Civil 3D for 3D design and public engagement. Autodesk’s tools reduced survey cycles from weeks to days, avoided lane closures, boosted scanning workflow efficiency by roughly 90%, supported over 130 reality‑capture projects, and materially improved negotiations (enabling a land purchase at one‑tenth the owner’s original price) through clearer 3D visualization.
