Plant 3D Toolset in AutoCAD Fuels Designs for the Natural Gas Industry

Process Pipeline Services, a Massachusetts-based engineering and consulting firm serving natural gas distribution and transmission companies, faced tight site constraints and constantly changing plans while redesigning pipeline and above-ground facilities. Using Autodesk’s Plant 3D toolset in AutoCAD, the team needed to detect clashes, manage shrinking footprints (including compressing three buildings into a single 50' x 28' regulator station), and speed up piping design and delivery.

Autodesk’s Plant 3D toolset was deployed from the project outset, producing 3D as-builts within a week, leveraging a customized library of thousands of parts and integrating field scanning to improve accuracy. The solution let Process Pipeline Services visualize conflicts, reduce rework, and accelerate turnaround—getting gas flowing at the new Portland station within a year—and increased productivity to the equivalent of two to three people for many tasks.
