Modernizing aged water infrastructure using High-Performance BIM Workflows

Hunziker Betatech AG partnered with Autodesk to tackle the complex modernization of the ARA Zimmerberg wastewater treatment plants in Switzerland. The team needed to combine two aging facilities into one new site while facing severe space constraints, strict environmental regulations, expanded purification requirements, and the need to keep the existing plant running during construction. Autodesk tools including ReCap Pro, Revit, Civil 3D, Plant 3D, and BIM 360 were used to support digital planning and feasibility analysis.

Autodesk enabled a fully digital BIM workflow that combined reality capture, 3D modeling, simulation, and collaborative coordination across disciplines. The approach helped the team resolve more than 300 coordination tasks before construction, achieve an 88% score under the Swiss Standard for Sustainable Building, and design a highly compact plant that reduced space needs from 54 to 19 square meters per resident. The new facility also adds advanced treatment capabilities, generates renewable energy, and is expected to reduce fossil-fuel emissions by 170 tons of CO2 per year.
