Building the World’s Most Sustainable Winery

Silver Oak Cellars, a family-owned Alexander Valley winery, set out to build a second ultra‑sustainable facility that would meet LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge targets while cutting energy and water use. After previously rebuilding following a devastating fire, the winery faced the technical and coordination challenges of integrating solar, LED lighting, advanced water-reuse systems, reclaimed materials, and nonstandard assemblies into a high‑performance production facility. To manage that complexity the project team relied on Autodesk tools, including Revit and BIM 360 Glue, as part of a BIM-driven delivery.

Autodesk’s Revit and BIM 360 Glue enabled coordinated BIM models and real‑time field review on iPads, letting the team identify and resolve many issues digitally instead of in the field—an effort Silver Oak says saved “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” The modeling also helped integrate reclaimed materials and novel systems (like the recycled hot‑water loop), contributing to a projected drop in potable production‑water use to about 2–3 gallons per gallon and putting the winery on track for LEED Platinum and multiple Living Building Challenge petals. Autodesk’s tools therefore improved collaboration, reduced construction risk and cost, and supported measurable sustainability gains.
