Inspiring Young Minds to Close the Construction Labor Shortage Gap

Class Of Your Own (COYO) faced the challenge of a shrinking pipeline of construction talent at a time when the UK and US report large labor shortfalls. To inspire and prepare the next generation for high-skill roles in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), COYO developed the Design Engineer Construct! (DEC) STEAM curriculum. Autodesk BIM 360 supported the effort by providing digital construction tools and industry‑standard workflows (including exposure to Autodesk Revit) to bring real-world technology into the classroom.

Autodesk BIM 360 worked with COYO and industry partners through COYO’s Adopt‑a‑School scheme to deliver day‑long workshops and multi‑year DEC programs where students role‑play as surveyors, architects and engineers, learn surveying, sustainability and BIM workflows, and present real projects. The program—now in its 10th year—has enabled hundreds of learners to gain recognised TQUK STEAM Futures qualifications, helped students at St Ambrose Barlow and other schools move into AEC apprenticeships and degree programmes, and shown measurable progress in building a pipeline of work‑ready talent for the construction industry.
