A Autodesk BIM 360 Case Study
Barton Malow, a national general contractor, was brought back in to restart and deliver two complex steel production lines at Severstal Dearborn after work was paused, facing tight schedules, thousands of drawings, multiple contractors using different software, and significant risk of clashes and rework. To manage preconstruction, construction, commissioning, and handover, Barton Malow deployed Autodesk BIM tools—specifically Autodesk BIM 360 along with Autodesk Navisworks Manage and Autodesk Revit Structure—to improve coordination and reduce schedule and cost risk.
By aggregating discipline models in Autodesk Navisworks for clash detection, using Autodesk Revit Structure for detailed concrete and foundation modeling, and leveraging Autodesk BIM 360 Field for mobile field data capture and commissioning integration, Barton Malow resolved numerous coordination conflicts, reduced rework, and provided a model-based handover to the owner. The effort accelerated routine tasks—preparing concrete layouts was completed up to 88 percent faster—while improving commissioning, startup readiness, and long-term operations and maintenance through a single, synchronized BIM deliverable powered by Autodesk BIM 360.
