Why Toast Shifted to Microservices, Starting with Auth0

Toast is a restaurant POS platform that grew rapidly and found its web application becoming a monolith that hindered further development. After acquiring a payroll company and facing disjointed account and login experiences (no SSO, inconsistent social logins, and fragmented identity management), Toast set out to move toward microservices and needed a robust authentication provider that fit its B2B model.

Toast chose Auth0 Private Cloud and migrated users gradually, starting with web app users. They implemented SSO, Auth0 Rules for MFA and token claims (reducing database calls), and now enjoy a seamless login experience, faster release cycles with self-service hotfixes, reduced internal hand-holding, and a platform better positioned for growth, expanded online ordering, and future social logins.
