IOC Exploration Strategy Group engaged Aucerna to help address a growing gap between the exploration team’s performance and executive expectations. The group was responsible for tracking progress toward long-term resource addition goals, but staff turnover had left a leadership void, communication with the executive team had broken down, and the portfolio was underperforming due to a lack of strategic direction.
Aucerna’s Strategic Consulting Group worked with executives and the strategy team to assess the portfolio, benchmark project economics, and reset expectations based on realistic assumptions. Aucerna found there was less than a 10% chance of meeting the original goals at current drilling levels and helped revise the target to one with an 80% chance of success at current capital spending levels; they also identified a more effective mix of 50% JV/partnerships and 50% organic projects, plus a need to shorten the lease-sale-to-drill cycle to under one year.
