How Boston Children’s Hospital Provided Instant Analysis of COVID-19 Data to Researchers using AtScale and Tableau Technology

Boston Children’s Hospital needed a faster way to turn crowdsourced symptom reports from CovidNearYou.org into actionable insights for public health partners and the CDC. The manual, time-consuming process of querying and visualizing diverse, rapidly changing data made it difficult to identify emerging hotspots and adapt syndromic surveillance definitions. To solve this, the hospital partnered with AtScale (and Tableau) to streamline analytics using AtScale’s Cloud OLAP model.

AtScale enabled a live connection between the underlying CovidNearYou.org data and Tableau visualizations so researchers could perform near real-time, multidimensional analysis and update case definitions across dashboards. As a result, more than one million reports from North America were rapidly analyzed to reveal hotspots, inform CDC recommendations and improve predictive models, giving public health officials faster, data-driven insights to guide pandemic response.
