Empowering Analytics A Seamless Migration to Cloud-Based Online Analytical Processing

Vodafone Portugal faced growing pressure to modernise its legacy on‑premises OLAP estate—built on Microsoft SSAS—to handle massive cloud data volumes while eliminating data silos, inconsistent metrics, high connector and maintenance costs, and poor query performance. To address these challenges Vodafone engaged AtScale (with implementation support from Celfocus) to migrate OLAP functionality to AtScale’s Universal Semantic Layer on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), preserving familiar SQL/MDX access for business users.

AtScale’s solution replicated Vodafone’s OLAP cubes on GCP, connected directly to BigQuery, and introduced centralized governance, role‑based security, and autonomous data engineering. The migration delivered dramatic performance and cost benefits: largest cube queries dropped from ~3 hours to about 45 minutes and cube refresh times moved from ~37 minutes to ~1 minute, while eliminating third‑party connectors, improving self‑service analytics, and providing a single source of truth and scalable cloud‑native architecture. AtScale enabled faster decisions, lower operational costs, and easier expansion of OLAP capabilities across Vodafone.
