Craft Brew brings sustainability to beer production

Craft Brew Alliance, the seventh-largest craft brewer in the U.S. (home to brands like Kona, Widmer Brothers and Redhook), launched a company-wide “world class craft” initiative in 2016 with a goal to cut GHG emissions 10% in three years. To meet that target they needed to optimize renewable energy, streamline their brewing footprint, and measure energy, water and CO2 intensity per barrel—challenges compounded by fragmented data and limited visibility into solar and cogeneration production.

They implemented BuildingOS to integrate 245 meters and brewery production data across 13 facilities, creating KPIs, dashboards and weekly reviews that made reporting and analysis straightforward. Using these insights and organized “treasure hunts” for teams, CBA shifted production to more efficient sites, increased renewable output and implemented targeted efficiency measures—saving 2.14 million kWh portfolio-wide while improving visibility and progress toward utility and emissions goals.
