Carleton College expands building data visibility to improve performance

Carleton College, a Minnesota liberal-arts institution with 103 buildings, 140 meters and 122 utility accounts, needed clearer visibility into campus energy and water use to meet ambitious sustainability goals and engage students. They faced fragmented data across five systems, slow detection of system failures, and the challenge of getting staff and students involved in performance improvement.

By adopting Lucid’s BuildingOS—publishing a public dashboard and giving facilities, sustainability staff, faculty and students access—Carleton centralized high-resolution (15‑minute) meter data, automated weekly performance reports, and implemented routines to monitor meter status. The college quickly identified a Siemens BMS integration error, used Load Profile and Heat Map tools to spot irregular schedules, sped up fault detection and response, and improved building energy management and campus engagement.
