American University emerges as a leader in resource efficiency

American University, a 60‑building campus in Washington, D.C. with 99 meters, set an ambitious goal to be carbon neutral by 2020 as it expanded. To meet that target the university needed to go beyond easy wins—improving building operations, investing in renewables, and engaging the campus community—while gaining better visibility into facility performance and expanding student sustainability programs.

By expanding its use of Lucid’s BuildingOS as a cross‑departmental analysis and visualization platform, AU now reviews energy weekly and water monthly, monitors schedules, and pinpoints low‑performing buildings. Heat maps uncovered heating and cooling during unoccupied hours in five buildings (saving $17K annually in one), energized student energy competitions with real‑time impact visuals, and gave utilities, BAS technicians, managers, faculty and students broad access to data to prioritize efficiency projects.
