Case Study: University of Rijeka achieves top‑50 HPC ranking and accelerates research with Atos' BURA supercomputer

The University of Rijeka takes a leap to join the 50 top research institutions in the world

The University of Rijeka needed to scale computing capacity to serve a large ecosystem of researchers and industry partners across biotechnology, bioinformatics, nano‑science, civil engineering and the natural sciences, with the ambition of joining the world’s top 50 research institutions. To meet this challenge the University partnered with Atos to deploy BURA, a supercomputer based on Bull technologies.

Atos delivered BURA (Bull B720 nodes with Direct Liquid Cooling and free‑cooling), a 288‑node system with 6,912 cores delivering 239 teraflops; it was installed in 90 days and is ranked #48 on the HPCG benchmark and listed on the Green500. The Atos solution exceeded expectations—16% higher performance and 56% lower energy consumption—making BURA the #1 supercomputer in the Adriatic region and accelerating research, industry collaboration and EU‑funded projects at the University of Rijeka.
