Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) Moving the past to the future

Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF), Austria’s national public broadcaster and guardian of a multimedia archive of well over one million hours, faced an unsustainable cycle of continual media format migrations, costly tape storage and hard-to-access material. ORF launched the DiMi (Digital Migration) project to convert an initial tranche of 300,000 hours (around 600,000 tapes) to file-based formats and engaged Atos to deliver the migration without disrupting day-to-day archive operations.

Atos set up a Vienna Competence Center and a dedicated 10–15-strong team, combining automated ingestion with staffed quality control and a flexible “factory” job-queuing approach. The Atos-led migration achieved an average throughput of 82.5 hours per day, 365 days a year, dramatically reducing physical storage, lowering operating costs and giving program makers, researchers and audiences fast digital access to previously hidden archival material.
