Case Study: Scottish Water cuts pollution and boosts wastewater resilience with Atos

A Atos Case Study

Preview of the Scottish Water Case Study

IoT sensors and real-time data enhance customer experience and protect the environment

Scottish Water, the national water utility serving millions of households and businesses across Scotland, needed a more proactive way to manage its wastewater network amid rising climate-related pressures, sewer chokes, and pollution incidents. Working with Atos, it aimed to move from reactive maintenance to an intelligent, predictive approach using real-time data and IoT-enabled wastewater network management.

Atos implemented the Wastewater Intelligent Network (WWIN) solution, deploying smart IoT sensors, a secure cloud-based data platform, dashboards, and real-time alerts, with machine learning capabilities added to strengthen future predictions. In the pilot phase, nearly 300 sensors were installed across four drainage operation areas, helping Scottish Water detect and respond to incidents faster and reduce flooding and choking; the program is now scaling toward nearly 3,000 sensors. The solution has already helped prevent pollution incidents, improve SEPA compliance, and protect sensitive bathing waters and customers from wastewater failures.
