Case Study: IDEX Biometrics accelerates fingerprint sensor design and boosts payment security with Atos (Nimbix) supercomputing

IDEX Biometrics uses HPC to develop fingerprint sensors for next-gen payment cards

IDEX Biometrics, a specialist in fingerprint imaging and recognition for payment and identity cards, faced a design bottleneck: their off‑chip capacitive sensor required large, parametric finite‑element simulations (each run ~70 hours) to optimize performance, but the small engineering team could not maintain an in‑house HPC farm. To solve this, IDEX partnered with Atos (via Nimbix) and used the Nimbix Cloud and associated supercomputing services alongside ANSYS to run the needed simulations.

Atos delivered the Nimbix Cloud/Nimbix Supercomputing Suite, giving IDEX the equivalent of four parallel HPC workstations and an order‑of‑magnitude increase in available compute, enabling full simulation and post‑processing workflows. The result: IDEX can now complete end‑to‑end sensor simulation and verification cycles in about a week (versus much longer before), accelerate time‑to‑market, improve design confidence, and deliver higher‑security, lower‑fraud payment cards without investing in local HPC infrastructure.
