Government Gateway- Customer Case Study

Government Gateway is the UK’s shared‑services platform created to deliver more cost‑effective, joined‑up public services by enabling secure online identity management and data sharing across central and local government. Atos was involved from the project’s inception, became prime contractor in 2006, and supplied the hosted infrastructure, identity services, payment/transaction engine (HTTS), 24/7 operational support and overall program management required to scale the system.

Atos built a scalable, secure environment and operational model that kept Government Gateway fit for purpose while supporting rapid growth: by early 2011 more than 18 million users (nearly 30% of the UK population) had registered, Government Gateway supported over 180 services across almost 100 departments, and handled up to ~500,000 tax transactions on peak days with 99.99% trouble‑free processing. The result was significant measurable impact — online tax self‑assessment costs one‑fifth of paper processing, improved customer experience and data security, new services such as Tell Us Once, and a repeatable shared‑service model now being used internationally, all delivered by Atos.
