A Atos Case Study
BP faced a major IT challenge after acquiring Aral in 2002 and becoming Germany’s leading fuel retailer: rationalize and standardize an expanded application portfolio to improve performance and responsiveness while reducing costs across retail, refinery and logistics systems. To achieve this, BP engaged Atos as its sole application management service provider, moving to an outsourced, proactive application management model that needed to ensure continuity, transparency and minimal business disruption.
Atos implemented a full application management outsourcing solution, integrating around 50 transferred BP specialists into its delivery team and taking responsibility for 60 application clusters (≈200 applications), with a hybrid delivery model later augmented by an Atos India team. The partnership delivered measurable results: Atos reduced application management costs by 7% year‑on‑year during the first three years, met every service target across patch, release, incident and change management, retained most of the original team after eight years, and provided scalable capacity for major program changes (eg. SEPA) while enabling BP to export the best‑practice model to other markets.
