Herman Miller partnered with Atomic Object to improve its Space Utilization Service, which helps customers understand how often their workspaces are being used. The challenge was to reliably collect occupancy data from many desks and chairs across installations and make that information easy to monitor and analyze remotely.

Atomic Object built a wireless data collection system using Motes, custom gateway devices, and a web app for managing studies, monitoring devices, and reporting on collected data. The solution automated data gathering, improved accuracy, reduced bandwidth needs through compression and error correction, and enabled remote management; Atomic Object also helped create a patented platform for Herman Miller.
