Using Git and Bitbucket, Met Office launches Space Weather app

The Met Office, the UK’s national weather service, launched a first-of-its-kind Space Weather app to forecast upper-atmosphere conditions that can disrupt infrastructure like GPS and mobile networks. To deliver the app, the organization needed a robust version control and configuration management solution to coordinate work across teams and external partners.

The Met Office adopted Git with Bitbucket and used Jira for agile delivery, with implementation support from Atlassian partner Clearvision. Bitbucket’s branching model and access controls sped development, simplified collaboration and backups, and reduced configuration-management costs by 75%, while Jira improved visibility for distributed teams—leading the Met Office to roll out Git and Bitbucket across more projects.
