Orbitz Worldwide, a leading online travel site handling over $11 billion in transactions across 180+ countries, faced a scaling problem: its centralized version-control system was too slow and caused long delays for remote teams — a critical issue given that any website downtime can cost millions. The mobile app team also struggled to maintain six apps for each of seven international brands from a common codebase.

Orbitz migrated to Git with Bitbucket and integrated Jira and Confluence to streamline development, add enterprise controls, and enable a continuous integration pipeline. The move (about 2,500 work-hours) cut costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars, enabled production deployments every three days, improved code review quality and early bug detection, and accelerated the team’s ability to make website and app updates.
