NASA’s Ames Research Center migrates to Git and takes off with Atlassian

NASA’s Ames Research Center, home to 2,500 employees and a long history of advanced R&D, needed a secure, compliant way for 150 software and aeronautical engineers to collaborate on NextGen (Next Generation Air Transportation System). Precision and adherence to NASA development and testing processes ruled out plain Git’s built-in controls, so the team required an approachable Git management solution that met strict security and traceability requirements.

Ames adopted Atlassian’s stack—Bitbucket for Git hosting, Jira for issue tracking, Crucible and Fisheye for code review and history, and Confluence for documentation—and migrated decades of change history with help from partner Go2Group. Within two months they were running on Git/Bitbucket, growing to 40 projects and ~200 repositories, with faster development cycles, improved code quality and traceability, simpler in-browser reviews, and secure remote access that met NASA process requirements.
