Docker, the San Francisco startup behind widely adopted container technology, faced the challenge of scaling collaboration as headcount jumped from about 20 to 250. Relying on email, word processing, and spreadsheets left no central repository for documentation, tribal knowledge, or streamlined engineering planning, so Docker needed a scalable system to improve cross-team communication and preserve institutional know-how.

Docker adopted Confluence company-wide (and Jira for product iteration tracking). Confluence became the central hub for Sales, Marketing, Design, and Engineering to store requirements, plans, and meeting notes, while executives publish OKRs and all‑hands recordings. The result was flatter communication, fewer silos, faster onboarding of new hires, and tighter coordination between teams.
