NASA’s Ames Research Center migrates to Git and takes off with Atlassian

The Ames Research Center at NASA, home to 2,500 staff and long-standing R&D programs, needed a secure, manageable way for 150 engineers working on the NextGen air-traffic modernization project to collaborate on mission-critical software while complying with strict NASA development and testing processes. Native Git lacked the enterprise controls and traceability they required, and the team also needed to preserve decades of project history for ongoing development and audits.

Ames adopted Atlassian tools — Bitbucket for Git management, Jira for issue tracking, Crucible and Fisheye for reviews and code visibility, and Confluence for documentation — and partnered with Go2Group to migrate historical change data. Within two months the environment supported 40 projects and ~200 repositories, enabling authenticated remote development, faster code reviews, improved code quality, better traceability, and clearer management visibility into project status.
