Austrian Federal Railways Uses Atlassian across Engineering, IT, and Business

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), a Vienna-based travel company serving about 459 million passengers annually with more than 40,000 employees, needed a more reliable way to develop and manage its railway ticketing apps across web, mobile, ticket machines and field operations. Developers were using a mix of Polarion, Jenkins, SVN and Git, which left gaps in visibility, reporting and traceability across the build process.

Engineering migrated to the Atlassian suite—Confluence for requirements, Jira for tracking, Bitbucket for source control and Bamboo for CI—giving teams end-to-end traceability and more efficient workflows. The rollout spread to other groups (Rail Cargo IT, Facility Management, Corporate Security), and ÖBB now runs thousands of projects and issues with broad adoption (about 28,000 Jira users, 320 projects, 88,500 issues; Confluence and Bitbucket also heavily used), enabling delivery of a more robust ticketing system for its 460 million annual passengers.
