Atlassian Enables State-Of-The-Art Computer Science Education at TUM

Atlassian helped Germany’s Technische Universität München (TUM), a leading science and technology university in Munich, transform traditional large lecture courses into hands-on software engineering projects. Instructors Dora Dzvonyar and Lukas Alperowitz needed a way to run and scale a course for 100 students so they could apply theory to real-world client work and gain job-ready experience.

Using Bitbucket, Jira Software, and Confluence, students created branches and committed solutions, instructors managed reviews with pull requests, and Jira Kanban boards flagged issues while student assistants handled distributed code reviews. Confluence became the teams’ documentation and knowledge base. The approach produced strong outcomes—11 mobile apps, 72 sprints, over 4,300 commits, about 1,100 pull requests and 130 customer downloads—while boosting student motivation and workplace readiness.
