The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) - Customer Case Study

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), part of NASA, works with the Ames Research Center and Johnson Space Center to develop the software that operates unmanned explorers like the Mars rovers. These distributed teams face challenges in mission planning, parsing large volumes of daily spacecraft data, compiling visual maps of rover progress, and coordinating work across multiple locations.

To address this, JPL’s Ensemble project adopted Atlassian tools—Jira and Confluence for project and requirements management, and FishEye, Clover, and Bamboo to maintain code quality and enable continuous delivery. Bamboo powers an automated build-and-deploy pipeline for multiple branches into JPL’s private cloud, letting engineers process daily rover data in hours and push updates rapidly—often with code written one day driving rover activity the next.
