NASA’s Ames Research Center migrates to Git and takes off with Atlassian

NASA’s Ames Research Center, a 2,500-employee research facility, needed a secure, compliant way for 150 engineers to collaboratively develop software for the safety-critical NextGen air-traffic modernization program. Built-in Git lacked the management, control, and traceability required by NASA processes, so the team needed an approachable solution that met strict authentication and audit requirements.

Ames adopted Atlassian’s suite—Bitbucket, Jira, Crucible, Fisheye and Confluence—integrating issue tracking, code review and repository management in the browser and migrating decades of history with partner Go2Group. Within two months they scaled to 40 Bitbucket projects and ~200 repositories, enabling remote, authenticated development, faster reviews, improved code quality, greater traceability and clearer project visibility for managers.
