Washington trust bank goes mobile

Washington Trust Bank, a nearly $4 billion regional commercial bank with 41 branches and about 750 employees, sought to migrate employees from Windows XP to Windows 7 and replace rising PC costs with virtual desktops via VMware Horizon View. Early in the VDI rollout they experienced severe storage I/O bottlenecks and poor user experience after deploying fewer than 20% of planned desktops, creating storage CAPEX and scalability concerns.

The bank deployed Atlantis ILIO software to optimize and accelerate storage I/O, automating provisioning with ILIO Center and integrating with VMware Horizon View Composer and HA. The solution cut storage per desktop by 84%, improved storage throughput by 92%, enabled a better-than-PC user experience, and supported 500 virtual desktops on existing storage (about a 500% increase in density).
