A Atlantis Computing Case Study
Kingston University, a UK institution with more than 20,000 students and 2,000 staff across four campuses, needed to modernize IT to meet rising expectations for mobile working and BYOD while managing 7,000 physical desktops with a small IT team. Slow, error-prone imaging and patching (a 35 GB base image that could take up to four hours to deploy) plus limited support for graphics‑intensive applications left students waiting for access and consumed large amounts of technician time.
The university rebuilt its infrastructure (re‑cabling and 4,500+ Wi‑Fi access points) and deployed VMware Horizon 6 with Mirage and Atlantis virtualized storage to deliver virtual desktops and unified image management. As a result, staff and students can access nearly 1,000 applications from any device and location; imaging and OS migrations are now under 40 minutes (an ~80% reduction), shared PC logins are under 15 seconds, IT maintenance demands have fallen, and the university has greater scalability and improved student satisfaction.
