Franciscus Hospital Achieved Fast VDI Performance on Traditional Storage Using Atlantis ILIO

Franciscus Hospital, a 472‑bed NIAZ‑certified hospital in the Netherlands, needed to move 1,600 virtual desktops (800 concurrent) to Windows 7 while keeping costs low, reusing decade‑old PCs as thin clients and protecting a mission‑critical electronic patient record system. With limited budget and strict performance requirements—especially very fast logon times for staff who move between locations—the IT team faced the twin challenges of storage scale and delivering a better‑than‑PC user experience.

The hospital deployed Atlantis ILIO alongside Citrix XenDesktop on VMware and existing EMC/HP infrastructure to optimize storage and deliver in‑memory performance without new high‑performance arrays. The phased rollout (starting with administration) completed hospital‑wide in 19 weeks, supporting 800 concurrent sessions, 200+ apps, and claiming up to 95% storage reduction; staff reported much faster logons and a superior desktop experience while the hospital avoided major CAPEX for new storage.
