A Atlantis Computing Case Study
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, a major UK specialist for planned orthopaedic surgery, needed to improve clinician efficiency and patient services by modernising its desktop IT. Faced with three separate, hard-to-manage storage arrays totalling 10 TB, slow desktop login times (15–20 minutes) and rising capacity and management burdens, the hospital chose to roll out a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) for around 1,000 staff.
ROH deployed Atlantis software-defined storage as part of the VDI, supporting 700 thin clients, 100 laptops and 70 tablets while enabling BYOD and remote access. The solution uses in‑RAM performance plus de‑duplication and compression to reduce storage needs; it cut login times to about 90 seconds (up to a 92.5% reduction), freed clinicians up to ~30 minutes a day, saved the IT team roughly one day a week, and delivered estimated annual savings of £91,000.
