Alaskan Bank Virtualizes Branches for Productivity Benefits

Northrim Bank, a 250‑person commercial bank based in Anchorage, Alaska with branches across the state, faced an aging data center and WAN that caused slow connectivity, application latency, WAN outages and poor VDI performance—problems that hurt teller line service, mobile workers and business continuity.

Working with Kovarus and Cisco, Northrim virtualized its data center and deployed a Cisco “Office‑in‑a‑Box” (ISR G2 with UCS E‑Series servers), MPLS/DMVPN networking, VMware Horizon View and Atlantis storage optimization to distribute latency‑sensitive services to branches. The result was higher availability and consistent application performance, centralized management, reduced travel and faster issue resolution, a 50% drop in branch infrastructure operating costs, about 75% reclaimed physical space, doubled virtual desktop density and capacity to handle two to three times the current load.
