A large travel and expense software company with a small, distributed data team needed a better way to help many internal data consumers find, understand, and trust data across a complex Snowflake environment. The team wanted to move beyond spreadsheets and make it easier to answer questions about data sources, transformations, and asset status, while also supporting self-service for analysts, engineers, and business users. To do that, they chose Atlan for data cataloging, lineage, and metadata management.

With Atlan, the company connected its stack, enriched Snowflake assets with definitions and certifications, enabled automated lineage, and used a Chrome plugin to surface context directly in Tableau. Atlan also helped the team identify and deprecate unused data assets, reducing storage and compute waste. In six months, the company deprecated hundreds of tables and about 150 dbt models, improving navigability, speeding onboarding, and making it easier to secure sensitive data with tagging and access policies.
