Hudson Headwaters Health Network (HHHN) is a Federally Qualified Health Center serving 60,000 patients across 13 rural clinics in upstate New York. Facing aging patient demographics, onerous federal reporting requirements, poor cash flow and inefficient billing that left days in accounts receivable at 85, the organization was at risk financially and struggling to sustain and expand care.

HHHN partnered with athenahealth to outsource revenue cycle management and deploy athenaClinicals, athenaCommunicator and athenaCoordinator Enterprise, using athena’s rules engine and payer knowledge to streamline claims and reporting. The turnaround cut DAR from 85 to 39, reduced billing staff and overhead, increased collections, enabled PCMH Level 3 and Meaningful Use achievements (34 providers), opened new payer revenue streams, expanded clinical services and positioned HHHN to absorb new patients under the ACA.
