How Accrue Savings Reinvented BNPL With A.Team and Raised $30M

Accrue Savings, founded by Michael Hershfield, set out to upend traditional Buy Now Pay Later by creating a “Save Now, Pay Later” option that incentivizes saving instead of encouraging debt. As a non-technical founder racing to prove viability in 100 days and then launch before the holiday code freeze, Accrue Savings partnered with A.Team to access a network of expert builders with fintech, compliance, and e-commerce experience to take the idea from concept to product.

A.Team assembled and scaled an engineering team that built Accrue’s platform in about 10 months, integrating with third-party services and onboarding retailers; the outcome was rapid traction — more than 35 major merchants, a 77% boost in merchant conversion, an abandonment rate under 1%, and recognition as a Time Magazine Best Invention. Using the product A.Team helped deliver, Accrue raised roughly $30M (a $4.7M seed and $25M Series A led by Tiger Global) and achieved the market momentum Hershfield had targeted.
