A AT&T Cybersecurity Case Study
The University of Wisconsin–Superior, a public university serving about 2,600 students with roughly 1,200 campus computers and 50 servers, faced an urgent security challenge when its intrusion prevention system reached end-of-life. Replacement quotes of $100,000–$200,000 were unaffordable given budget constraints, so IT leadership needed a cost-effective way to protect a large, diverse campus network.
After evaluating AlienVault Unified Security Management (USM), UW–Superior deployed the platform with AlienVault professional services and brought up IDS quickly. By using USM’s combined IDS, SIEM, behavioral monitoring, vulnerability assessment and host-based tools — plus an external sensor — the team gained far greater visibility (including detecting attempted Shellshock attacks), reduced false positives, centralized ticketing and reporting, and strengthened campus security while staying within budget.
