AlienVault Unified Security Management Platform Secures the City of Los Angeles, CA

The City of Los Angeles’ Information Technology Agency (ITA) manages IT and security for a metro population of about 13 million, supporting thousands of routers/switches, 500+ application and web servers, mainframes and critical systems (including LAPD and financial/payment sites). ITA needed to meet PCI-DSS requirements — collecting and storing 10,000–15,000 events per second from payment-related devices — while operating with a very limited budget and small security staff.

After piloting OSSIM, ITA adopted the AlienVault Unified Security Management (USM) Platform, which combines asset discovery, vulnerability assessment, threat detection (network/host/wireless IDS), behavioral monitoring and security intelligence. The platform’s easy deployment, customizable plugins and feed-based correlation/reports gave immediate visibility, allowed long-term event storage, met compliance needs, and enabled ITA to secure its large environment with minimal staff while avoiding the cost of multiple additional products.
