Case Study: National Institute of Genetics achieves high-speed international DNA data transfers with Aspera Connect Server

NIG uses Aspera's Connect Server For International Collaboration

Japan’s National Institute of Genetics (NIG) operates multiple research facilities, including the DNA Data Bank of Japan and a DNA Sequencing Center, that produce massive sequencing datasets (up to ~20 GB each) and must exchange them daily with international partners such as EBI and NCBI. Traditional FTP and shipping hard drives proved unreliable, slow and costly, creating a need for a faster, more dependable way to move large genomic data.

NIG deployed Aspera’s Connect Server using patented fasp transport to enable secure, high‑speed transfers via a web-based directory and an install‑on‑demand browser plug‑in. The result: consistent use of available 1 Gbps bandwidth while coexisting with other traffic, faster international collaboration, easier researcher access with minimal training, and reduced capital and operational costs.
