Enabling Video Transcoding In The Cloud With Aspera On Demand

Zencoder is a cloud-based video transcoding service built on AWS that converts large, high-bitrate video files for delivery to tablets, phones and browsers. It faced a major challenge moving multigigabyte files into the cloud using TCP-based protocols (HTTP/FTP), which delivered as little as 21.8 Mbps over a 1 Gbps link (2% utilization) and could take roughly 10 hours to transfer one hour of DNxHD content—creating a need for faster, secure and reliable transfers.

Zencoder integrated Aspera On Demand and the Aspera Embedded Client so customers can use their own Aspera servers or Zencoder’s secure transfer tool; Aspera’s FASP protocol fully utilizes available bandwidth regardless of distance or network conditions. The result: up to 23x faster transfers, sustained throughput up to ~500 Mbps, a one-hour DNxHD transfer reduced from ~10 hours to under 26 minutes, enterprise-grade encryption in transit and at rest, and seamless scalability within the AWS cloud.
